The Drum’s Indie 100: World’s top independent agencies in 2026 revealed
Our global ranking of the indies setting the pace across creativity, client satisfaction and industry recognition, now underpinned by a more rigorous methodology than ever before, is here.

Rethink Toronto has been ranked the world’s top independent agency in The Drum’s Indie 100, which returns for 2026 with a new methodology that combines creative performance, awards success and client satisfaction.
The Romans takes second, followed by Bigtime Creative Shop, Bear Meets Eagle on Fire and Special Group US, forming a top tier that spans North America, Europe, the Middle East and Australasia.
The 2026 ranking is determined by three signals: standing in The Drum’s World Creative Rankings, performance in The Drum Awards and client ratings from The Drum Recommends. These inputs combine to create an overall score for each agency, which determines its final position.
Building a credible ranking of independent agencies starts with a deceptively difficult question: who, exactly, qualifies as independent? Independence is one of the agency world’s most-used labels. As we have discovered, it is also one of its least precise. Our intention is to spotlight agencies that are not only independent in status but independent in spirit.
So, for the purposes of the Indie 100, we have defined an independent agency as one that is not owned, in whole or in part, by a major advertising or marketing holding company or any of its networks. Investment from financial investors or other independently owned agencies is permitted, provided the agency’s founders, management and/or employees retain majority ownership and control.
We have also capped eligibility at 500 staff. That is not a rejection of larger independent agencies, but a way of defining the competitive set this ranking is intended to cover. Above that threshold, many independent agencies begin to operate more like agency networks in their own right, with the reach, infrastructure and market presence that scale affords.
That means there are some conspicuous absences. The likes of Wieden+Kennedy, Mother, M&C Saatchi and Edelman have helped set the standard for independent agencies globally. Their success has helped define what independent agencies can achieve. The Indie 100 is intended to cast the spotlight wider, recognising the independent businesses making their own mark around the world.
